Hidden within Bremerhaven’s bustling streets, the Landratsamt Lehe whispers tales of a time long past. Before Bremerhaven even existed, the small village of Lehe held its ground, a vital trading post on the Geeste River. This very spot, the Landratsamt Lehe, was once the heart of Lehe’s administration. Built in 1865 as a poorhouse and orphanage, the Landratsamt Lehe has worn many hats. It served as a barracks before finally becoming Lehe’s town hall in 1887. Imagine the transformation! Architect Carl Pogge adorned the building with a magnificent facade, a blend of Gothic and Romantic styles. Notice the central projection, the pointed arch entrance, and the decorative pinnacles reaching skyward. A clock sits prominently under the arch, a constant reminder of time’s passage. The coat of arms of Lehe, featuring crossed scythe blades, proudly marks the building. In 1907, the town hall expanded, adding a grand meeting hall to accommodate the growing needs of Lehe. The Landratsamt Lehe witnessed Lehe’s growth, its struggles, and ultimately its merger with Geestemünde to form Wesermünde in 1924. Though Lehe lost its independence, the Landratsamt Lehe remained, a steadfast symbol of the town’s rich history. Today, the building houses Bremerhaven’s construction administration, a fitting continuation of its civic purpose. Look closely at the Landratsamt Lehe. It’s more than just a building. It’s a living testament to Lehe’s enduring spirit, a tangible link to the past in the heart of modern Bremerhaven.
