Imagine stepping back in time right here at Rathaus Lehe. It has witnessed the transformation of Lehe. Lehe is now a part of Bremerhaven.

The Rathaus Lehe stands as a testament to Lehe’s rich history. It is a magnificent building. It reflects different eras. The Rathaus Lehe began its life in 1865. It served a humble purpose. It was an almshouse and an orphanage. It mirrored the Alte Schule in design. Both stood on Leher Markt.

But Rathaus Lehe was destined for more. In 1887, Carl Pogge reshaped it. He infused it with Neo-Gothic grandeur. Intricate ornaments adorned its facade. It was even briefly used as an artillery barracks.

The early 20th century brought further changes. Heinrich Lagershausen expanded the Rathaus Lehe in 1907. This expansion was intended to accommodate new municipal offices. A small tower was added. It crowned the three-story extension.

After World War II, Rathaus Lehe became the seat of the city’s construction department. The building underwent renovations in the 1980s and 1990s.

However, the construction department moved to the new Technical Town Hall in 2004. The Rathaus Lehe found a new purpose. It became a justice center. It housed chambers of the Bremen-Bremerhaven Labor Court. The inheritance court and offices of the youth welfare office moved in. The Bremerhaven Care Association joined them in 2005.

The Rathaus Lehe received landmark status in 1984. This recognized its architectural and historical significance. The west and north facades underwent extensive renovations in 2013 and 2014. The city of Bremerhaven provided funds for the south facade renovation in 2017. The federal government contributed to preserve this cultural monument.

Today, the Rathaus Lehe stands not only as a building. It is a symbol of Lehe’s enduring spirit. It’s a reminder of its evolution. It started as a haven for the needy. Now it is a center for justice and administration. Take a moment to appreciate the Rathaus Lehe. Think of the stories within its walls. It stands as a proud landmark in Bremerhaven.
