A whisper of history echoes from the stones of Église Saint-Antoine-des-Quinze-Vingts. Right here before us stands a testament to Parisian resilience and faith.

This church isn’t just a building. It’s a story woven through centuries. It’s a narrative of religious transformation urban renewal and artistic expression. Originally the area belonged to the Saint-Paul parish. Then the domain of Sainte-Marguerite. Two institutions held sway here. The abbey of Saint-Antoine-des-Champs and the Hospice des Quinze-Vingts. The abbey was suppressed during the French Revolution. Its church became the site of worship for the new parish of Saint-Antoine-des-Quinze-Vingts. But the abbey church was sold and destroyed. For a hundred years the chapel of the Hospice served as a parish church. It became too small. A larger church was needed.

The current Église Saint-Antoine-des-Quinze-Vingts is the result of that need. Built between 1902 and 1903 its neo-Romanesque style hints at a blend of styles. The architect Emile Vaudremer’s influence is clear. So is the touch of Art Nouveau in certain details. The church’s facade is a beautiful blend of brick and stone. Its semi-circular portal is decorated with three lancet windows. The interior is just as striking. The high altar area is particularly noteworthy. Two impressive statues stand here. Saint Anthony the Great on one side and Saint Louis on the other. Sculpted by Raoul Larche they represent the church’s spiritual heritage and its connection to the Hospice des Quinze-Vingts.

The church’s stained glass windows are another highlight. Created by the Champigneulle workshops many depict patron saints. Some represent the donors who helped make the church a reality. The central rose window is particularly stunning. Depicting the Trinity and the Evangelists it’s a powerful symbol of faith. In 2005 new non-figurative stained-glass windows were added. These celebrate the church’s centenary. The Église Saint-Antoine-des-Quinze-Vingts also boasts two organs. One by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll the other by Joseph Merklin. These instruments fill the church with beautiful music.

The church’s history is intimately intertwined with the history of Paris itself. Mgr Affre the Archbishop of Paris was fatally wounded on the barricades in 1848. His stole a relic of this tragic event is still preserved in the church. Église Saint-Antoine-des-Quinze-Vingts is more than a place of worship. It is a living museum. It is a community hub a testament to faith and endurance in the heart of Paris. It’s a place where history echoes in every stone. It’s a place worth exploring.
