Peering up at the Radarturm, can you imagine the stories this structure could tell? The Radarturm, also known as the Richtfunkturm Bremerhaven, is more than just a tower. It is a vital part of Bremerhaven’s maritime infrastructure.

Built between 1962 and 1965, the Radarturm stands approximately 107 meters tall. Its primary purpose is to house antennas. These antennas receive radar images and radio communications. They relay them to the traffic control center. This center is staffed 24/7. It ensures the safety of ship traffic on the Outer and Lower Weser.

Interestingly, the Radarturm is often called a radar tower. Yet, it doesn’t actually have a radar antenna itself. The antennas on the tower link to other land-based radar stations. These stations form a network along the Weser River.

For a time, the Radarturm offered public access to a viewing platform. This platform sits at 59 meters high. Visitors could enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view. The view stretched over Bremerhaven. It extended to the Weser estuary and parts of Lower Saxony. On a clear day, it was breathtaking. Unfortunately, the viewing platform is currently closed to the public.

Unlike many other similar towers, the Radarturm is not owned by a telecommunications company. Instead, the Waterways and Shipping Office of Bremerhaven owns it. This highlights its crucial role in maritime operations. The tower supports mobile radio, maritime radio and other essential communication systems. It also hosts antennas for federal and state authorities.

The Radarturm marks the location of the former lock to the Old Harbor. This area has a rich history. It connects the modern tower to Bremerhaven’s past. The Radarturm continues to play a crucial role in maritime safety. It ensures smooth shipping traffic in this busy port city. Although you can’t go up today, take a moment. Appreciate its function and its place in Bremerhaven’s skyline.
