The imposing silhouette of Christuskirche pierces the sky. Its story began not with a single stone but with a burgeoning city. Bremerhaven itself was founded in 1827. Geestemünde however experienced a rapid population increase. This growth followed the construction of the harbor in 1845. By 1870 its population swelled from a mere 1818 to 3000. The existing Marienkirche proved far too small. This overcrowding necessitated the building of a new church.

Enter Conrad Wilhelm Hase. A renowned architect he was commissioned in 1868. Hase designed Christuskirche in the stunning style of neo-Gothic architecture. Construction started in 1872 culminating in the church’s grand inauguration on November 14 1875.

But the tale doesn’t end there. The original tower’s construction was plagued by a fatal flaw. Inferior mortar proved too weak for the spire. It needed to be demolished just two years later. The tower however was rebuilt in 1880 a testament to resilience and architectural expertise.

Christuskirche stands as a three-aisled hall church. Its brick facade boasts almost floor-to-ceiling Gothic windows. The interior is equally impressive. Its length spans 29 meters while its width is 18 meters. Notice the elegant supporting buttresses. These support the outer walls of the nave and choir. The intricate details are captivating. The main altar from around 1875 is remarkable. Its wooden panels are ornately carved. Six niches hold oil paintings. These feature Old Testament figures like Aaron Melchisedek Isaac and Abel.

The 60-meter-high west tower is an iconic landmark. Its copper-clad octagonal helmet crowns this majestic structure. The alternating dark and light bricks create a beautiful texture on the tower’s facade. The two-part portal features a stone rose window a delicate contrast to the robust brickwork.

The church’s bells also hold a poignant story. Those used prior had to be given up for war efforts in both World Wars. The four present bells were cast in 1955. They bear inscriptions like “Glory to God in the height” and “Peace on Earth”.

Even the old parsonage next to Christuskirche holds historical significance. Designed by Hase itself the building has been updated over the years but its essence remains.

It is a place of worship a historical monument and a landmark. Its story echoes through the ages. This makes Christuskirche a true treasure of Bremerhaven.
