Originally built for the US Army in 1939, the Presidio Theatre stands reborn. It is now a modern performing arts center. The Presidio Theatre is located in the heart of the Presidio National Park. It is at 99 Moraga Avenue.
Imagine soldiers and their families gathering here. For nearly six decades the Presidio Theatre served as their entertainment hub. They watched movies. They enjoyed live events and radio broadcasts. Bob Hope and Jack Benny performed here. Marlene Dietrich and Loretta Young graced its stage.
The Presidio Theatre was funded by the Works Progress Administration. This was part of President Roosevelt’s New Deal. The Spanish Colonial style architecture was meticulously maintained during its later renovation. Wide arches and flat stucco surfaces define its look.
In 1994, the Army left the Presidio. The Presidio Theatre screened its last film, “Maverick”. Then it sat vacant for over 20 years.
But the story doesn’t end there. The Margaret E. Haas Fund partnered with the Presidio Trust. They brought the Presidio Theatre back to life.
Excavation doubled the usable space. Large dressing rooms and a lower lobby were added. A rehearsal studio was created. New wings accommodate catering facilities. There is also a green room and loading area. The proscenium arch was moved forward. This increased stage depth. Ramps now link performers and the audience.
The Presidio Theatre reopened in September 2019. It now hosts dance, theatre, music and cinema. It presents performing arts of all kinds. The Presidio Theatre is a rental venue. It hosts holiday parties, conferences and film screenings.
The Presidio Theatre has 600 seats. It is accessible by MUNI routes 30 and 43. The Presidio Go shuttle provides free transport. Parking is free after 6pm in the Main Post Parade Lawn lot.
