Established in 1969 the Humboldt-Gymnasium Karlsruhe stands proudly. It’s a testament to Karlsruhe’s commitment to education. This impressive school is located in the Nordweststadt district. The name honors the renowned Humboldt brothers Wilhelm and Alexander. Their legacy of intellectual curiosity resonates within these walls.

The Humboldt-Gymnasium didn’t spring up overnight. The Karlsruhe city council officially approved its construction in September 1968. Imagine the excitement. A brand new school for a growing community. Initially only the first section of the building was ready. Seventeen classes had to share just twelve classrooms. This caused some initial overcrowding. The school’s full capacity was only achieved later in 1971. That year also saw the completion of its sports facilities. A small playing field a 100-meter track and a large playing field were all built. Students had much-needed room for play and exercise.

A significant shift occurred in 1978. The new upper secondary school curriculum NGO was introduced. This system emphasized the equal importance of all subjects. Students chose two advanced courses and several basic courses. Even sports became a factor in determining a student’s readiness for university. The nearby Nordwest 1960 sports club offered additional facilities. Students could use their courts and gyms. By 1980 the Humboldt-Gymnasium had become the third largest in Karlsruhe.

The school has seen its share of intriguing moments. In 1997 then-principal Berthold Schäfule created a stir. He removed a student-made mural overnight. It was a humorous parody of Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper. The students had replaced Jesus’s face with Schäfule’s. The disciples were replaced by the faces of other teachers. The incident caused quite a scandal. It sparked a debate across the region. Schäfule faced criticism for his actions.

The year 1999 was a milestone. The school issued its 2000th Abitur certificate. It marked a significant achievement. A symbol of the school’s long-standing dedication to education and student success. In 2007 the school transitioned to a full-day program. A new cafeteria and dining hall were added. It allowed for a more comprehensive educational experience. The students had access to meals and more supervised time.

From 2013 the Humboldt-Gymnasium participated in the G9 model program. Students could now complete their Abitur in nine years instead of eight. Students from both G8 and G9 programs then shared the upper level classes. The same final exam was taken by both. This Humboldt-Gymnasium continues its impressive journey. It’s a place where tradition meets innovation a place where students learn and grow. It is a valuable part of Karlsruhe’s landscape. A place built on learning.
