Founded in 1939 as the Fundamental Baptist Bible Institute Arlington Baptist University has a rich history. It began modestly with just sixteen students. Classes were held in the First Baptist Church of Fort Worth. These early students went on to become pastors and missionaries. The World Fundamental Baptist Fellowship supported them.

The university’s name changed several times. In 1945 it became Bible Baptist Seminary. Later it moved to Arlington in 1952. The name then changed to Arlington Baptist College in 1955. The college eventually achieved full accreditation a significant milestone. In 2017 it officially became Arlington Baptist University.

J Frank Norris a prominent figure founded both the university and the World Baptist Fellowship. A bronze sculpture of him stands on campus. The campus also holds a piece of history. It’s the site of the former Top O’ Hill Terrace casino. A Texas state historical marker recognizes its significance. Remnants of the casino such as a sandstone guardhouse and escape tunnels remain. You can even tour them by appointment.

Arlington Baptist University offers undergraduate and graduate programs. However it doesn’t offer doctoral programs. The university faced controversy in 2015. It applied for an exception to Title IX. This would allow it to discriminate against LGBT students based on religious reasons. The university’s athletic teams the Patriots compete in the National Christian College Athletic Association.

From humble beginnings in a Fort Worth church Arlington Baptist University has grown. It’s become a significant institution of higher education.
