Could a former three-bedroom house become a hub for a vibrant community? You might be surprised to learn that it can. Right here, before you, stands the Westall Mosque. This unassuming building has a rich history, reflecting the Indonesian Muslim community’s dedication and spirit in Melbourne. Westall Mosque’s story began in the late 1990s. Indonesian Muslims in Victoria felt an urgent need for a spiritual and social center. With the support of the Indonesian Consulate General in Melbourne, they joined hands to form the Indonesian Muslim Community of Victoria (IMCV). In 1998, they purchased a modest three-bedroom house on Rosebank Avenue, which would eventually become the Westall Mosque. Fundraising efforts continued, uniting Indonesian students, residents, and the community. By 1999, enough funds were raised to start renovations. Remarkably, much of the labor was provided by volunteers from the IMCV community itself, a testament to their commitment. By mid-2000, the basic structure of the Westall Mosque was complete and ready for use. Although much remained to be done, the community had a place to call their own. Over time, through continued fundraising and community effort, Westall Mosque’s facilities improved. Today, the Westall Mosque stands as a testament to the power of community, resilience, and faith. It’s not just a place of worship. The Westall Mosque serves as a vibrant hub for Islamic education, social gatherings, and cultural exchange.
