How did a nurseryman from Finland leave such a mark on the Australian landscape? We are now standing at Nobelius Siding, a railway stop on the Puffing Billy Railway that speaks to the ambition of one man: Carl Axel Nobelius.

Nobelius Siding was built in 1904 to serve the needs of the Nobelius Nursery, a sprawling operation that was once the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. The nursery’s founder, Carl Axel Nobelius, arrived in Australia from Finland in 1871, bringing his horticultural expertise with him. He saw the potential of the Dandenong Ranges and established his nursery here in the 1880s. Nobelius wasn’t content with just local sales. He had his sights set on exporting his trees across Australia and even overseas.

This siding, along with the adjacent packing shed, allowed Nobelius to ship his plants directly from the nursery, bypassing the costly and time-consuming process of transporting them by bullock dray. The nursery flourished, exporting millions of fruit and ornamental trees to all corners of the globe. It’s no exaggeration to say that Carl Axel Nobelius helped to shape the landscape of Australia, influencing the very trees that line many of our streets today. Though he passed away in 1921, his legacy lives on. The nursery may be gone, but the impact of Nobelius’ vision is still evident. It’s a reminder that even a small railway siding can have a big story to tell, a story of ambition, entrepreneurship, and the enduring power of nature.
