Have you ever seen a fountain that tells a tragic love story? Welcome to the Monumento Las Focas in Quito. Right here before you stands La Insidia a stunning sculptural fountain. It’s more than just water and bronze. It’s a captivating tale frozen in time.

La Insidia also known as the Pileta de las Focas is a significant cultural landmark in Quito. It depicts the Greek myth of Eurydice and Orpheus a tale of passionate love and devastating loss. The central figure a slender woman holds a serpent. This represents Eurydice the nymph tragically killed by a viper.

But the story extends beyond Eurydice. Notice the four bronze seals flanking the woman? They symbolize Proteus Poseidon’s son. Proteus was said to have foreseen Eurydice’s death. The five bronze vases also hold meaning. They are an allegory for the water in which Orpheus’ head was cast after his tragic demise.

Originally located in Parque 24 de Mayo now known as El Ejido the Monumento Las Focas moved multiple times. Its journey reflects Quito’s changing cityscape. In the 1960s it relocated. Then in 1971 the construction of the Guambra Bridge required another move. It finally found its current home at the intersection of Avenidas Patria and 12 de Octubre.

Sadly the Monumento Las Focas has suffered vandalism. Over the years several of the bronze seals and vases were stolen. Despite these losses the remaining sculpture still evokes the myth’s poignant beauty. The resilience of La Insidia is a testament to Quito’s enduring spirit. It’s a reminder that even in loss and change stories persist. Stories like the one whispered by the water cascading from this remarkable fountain. This is a powerful tale of loss. But it’s also a tribute to the enduring power of love and myth. Remember La Insidia next time you travel along Avenidas Patria and 12 de Octubre.
