In the heart of Chicago’s West Side lies West Garfield Park. It’s more than just a neighborhood. It’s a story etched in time, a blend of ambition, struggle, and resilience. West Garfield Park wasn’t always a park. Initially, it was farmland, a transit point for those traveling through. The area began transforming in 1873 when the North Western Railway built its shops north of Kinzie Street. This brought an influx of workers, primarily Scandinavian and Irish, and the village of Central Park began to grow.

The establishment of Garfield Park in 1870, later renamed after President James A. Garfield, truly shaped the area. The park boasted an impressive administrative building, exotic plant exhibits, picnic areas, and even a bicycle track. It offered a respite from the bustling city life. A darker side of entertainment existed too. The Garfield Park Race Track, initially a gentlemen’s club, turned into a gambling hub. This attracted controversy and concern from residents worried about their property values. After raids and a fatal shooting involving police officers and a horseman, the track closed in 1892.

The track’s closure paved the way for new housing and businesses. West Garfield Park flourished in the early 20th century. Madison Street became its vibrant commercial center. Department stores, movie palaces like the 4,000-seat Marbro Theater and the “world’s most beautiful movie house,” the Paradise, drew crowds. The Midwest Athletic Club, completed in 1928, even became the tallest building between Chicago and Des Moines.

The Great Depression and World War II brought hardship. Yet, the community persevered. West Garfield Park faced significant racial change in the 1950s as African Americans moved into the area, often met with hostility. Construction of the Eisenhower Expressway displaced residents, and within a decade, the neighborhood’s demographics shifted from all-white to all-black. Riots in 1965 and 1968, sparked by local incidents, devastated the community, leading to business closures and increased crime.

Despite these challenges, organizations like Bethel New Life emerged. They worked towards preserving West Garfield Park’s history and revitalizing the area with new housing projects. Even today, challenges remain. But West Garfield Park’s story continues. Its proximity to the Loop, just five miles away, remains an advantage. Stores still operate at Madison and Pulaski. The Tilton School, designed by Dwight Perkins, and the Garfield Park Conservatory are architectural and cultural treasures. West Garfield Park’s journey reflects the larger narrative of Chicago. It is a story of change, resilience, and the enduring spirit of a community striving to preserve its past and build a brighter future.
