Lecil Travis Martin better known as Boxcar Willie was an American country music singer-songwriter. He sang in the old-time hobo style. He wore overalls and a floppy hat. Boxcar Willie wasn’t just a stage name. It started as a character in one of his songs. He later adopted it as his own.

His early career ran parallel to his service in the United States Air Force. He served as an enlisted flight engineer. He served during the Korean War flying on a B-29 Super Fortress. He even wrote his signature song while sitting at a railroad crossing in Lincoln Nebraska. It was inspired by a man who resembled his chief boom operator Willie Wilson.

Boxcar Willie didn’t achieve mainstream success in the US right away. He first found fame in England. He sold millions of records. He even reached number 5 in the UK Albums Chart with his 1980 album King of the Road. He was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 1981 a significant milestone. He later moved to Branson Missouri where he opened a theater a museum and two motels all bearing his name.

He performed at his theater in Branson until his death in 1999. He battled leukemia in his final years. He was buried in Branson Missouri. His legacy lives on not just in the hearts of fans but also in places like this overpass. The Boxcar Willie Memorial Overpass stands as a testament to his enduring popularity and influence.
