Picture a time when Thalkirchen sought connection. That’s how our story of the Thalkirchner Brücke begins. This bridge isn’t just a way to cross the Isar. It’s a testament to Munich’s history and ingenuity.
The Thalkirchner Brücke stands in Untergiesing-Harlaching. It stretches across the Isar and the Isar-Werkkanal. The bridge connects Thalkirchen’s historic heart to its surroundings.
Thalkirchen became part of Munich in 1900. The community demanded an Isar bridge as part of the deal. There was even a plan to move the Wittelsbacherbrücke here. That bridge was an iron structure from the Isarvorstadt.
In 1902, concrete was suggested for the new bridge. But the Isartalverein protested. They feared it would ruin Thalkirchen’s rural charm. So, in 1903, a wooden bridge on concrete foundations was chosen. It opened on September 18, 1904.
But the old bridge couldn’t last forever. By the 1980s, it needed replacement. Again, wood was the material of choice. From 1989 to 1991, Richard J. Dietrich designed a unique structure. It was a spatial framework bridge. This was the first time this design was used for a bridge. The new bridge used the old foundations. This avoided disturbing the river.
The Thalkirchner Brücke’s framework is made of spruce and larch wood. Steel nodes hold it together. In total, 520 cubic meters of wood were used. Sadly, in 1992, arson damaged four sections. These had to be replaced. That same year, the bridge won the German Timber Construction Award.
The Thalkirchner Brücke is vital for local traffic. It’s the only Isar crossing between two major bridges. It intentionally avoids heavy trucks. This protects Thalkirchen’s old town.
The bridge is also important for pedestrians. The Thalkirchen U-Bahn station is nearby. Also close is an entrance to the Hellabrunn Zoo. The Flaucher recreation area is just north.
Between 1991 and 2012, marked bike lanes caused problems. Pedestrians and cyclists often collided. In 2012, the bike lanes were removed. The speed limit was reduced to 30 km/h.
Since 2009, love locks have appeared on the bridge. The city tolerates this tradition. But they know cheap locks can damage the steel.
