Ever wonder how four small hamlets became one town called Sunnyvale? Let’s explore Sunnyvale together. Sunnyvale is located in Dallas County, Texas. It stands as the easternmost city within the county.
Before Sunnyvale existed as we know it, Native American tribes inhabited this land. Later, Spain ruled the area. Mexico then gained control. After the Texas Revolution, the Republic of Texas took over. The town started to develop. Settlers migrated to what is now Sunnyvale. They named their hamlet Long Creek.
As more people arrived, three new hamlets formed. These were New Hope, Tripp, and Hatterville. New Hope became quite prosperous. It boasted many shops, a fair called Gala Days, and its own newspaper, the New Hope News. It rivaled neighboring Mesquite. Sadly, a devastating storm in 1921 wiped out New Hope. Buildings suffered damage and its prosperous days ended.
For many years, the four towns remained stagnant. Then, in 1953, something special happened. Hatterville, New Hope, Long Creek, and Tripp decided to merge. They chose the name Sunnyvale. The winning name came from a local school contest.
Sunnyvale cherishes its rich history. You can still see reminders of the past. There’s the old New Hope School. The Tripp First Baptist Church dates back to 1882. Many antique houses also remain. The Long Creek Cemetery in southern Sunnyvale is over 150 years old. The first recorded burial was Leona Crownover Caldwell in 1855.
Incorporation in 1953 brought changes. Sunnyvale only allowed single-family houses on one-acre lots.
Sunnyvale faced a terrible event on December 26, 2015. An EF-4 tornado struck. It caused extensive damage to the Plantation RV park. The tornado grew stronger. It moved into Garland and Rowlett. Tragically, twelve people died and many suffered injuries.
In more recent news, Sunnyvale made headlines on June 5, 2023. There was a mass shooting incident. A woman died and four children were hurt.
Sunnyvale continues to grow. In 2020, the population was 7,893. The median household income was $137,656.
Sunnyvale’s demographics have changed over time. It was once overwhelmingly non-Hispanic white. Now, it’s more diverse. The 2020 census showed significant growth in Asian American and Hispanic populations.
