Can you hear the rumble of tanks echoing through time? The Voie de la 2e D. B. whispers stories of liberation. This memorial route traces the path of General Leclerc’s 2nd Armored Division. Their journey began on Utah Beach in 1944. The Voie de la 2e D. B. stretches from Normandy, through Paris, to the battles in Alsace. It’s marked by distinctive white resin markers. These markers stand 1.2 meters tall. They bear the red torch of liberty, the blue and white “A” insignia of the US Third Army, and the inscription “Voie de la / 2ème D.B. / 1944-1945”. On the back, you’ll find the division’s emblem: a blue and yellow map of France overlaid on the Cross of Lorraine. Each marker also indicates the location’s name and its distance from Saint-Martin-de-Varreville, the landing point on Utah Beach. Some markers also have a QR code. This code links to a website with historical information about the specific location along the Voie de la 2e D. B.. The route includes approximately 283 communes. These were either crossed or liberated by the division. An interesting exception is a marker in Grugé-l’Hôpital. This town wasn’t on the liberation route. The marker commemorates where Leclerc began his escape from occupied France in 1940. The Voie de la 2e D. B. is more than just a series of markers. It’s a living testament to the courage and determination of those who fought for freedom. It’s a journey through history, etched in stone and steel. It’s a reminder that even in the darkest of times, the flame of liberty can burn bright.
