Is this grand building staring back at us? It exudes an air of authority doesn’t it? This is Der Senator für Finanzen. It’s more than just an office building. It’s a monument to Bremen’s financial history. The current Finanzsenator, Björns Fecker, oversees the finances of both the state and the city of Bremen.

Der Senator für Finanzen is responsible for managing Bremen’s financial resources, including taxes, budgets, and investments. The building itself has a fascinating past. Originally called “Haus des Reichs”, it was built in the late 1920s by the Nordwolle company. The Lahusen brothers, who ran Nordwolle, intended it to be a grand administrative palace. They spared no expense, hiring renowned architects Hermann and Eberhard Gildemeister.

However, fate had other plans. Nordwolle went bankrupt before they could even move in! In a twist of irony, the building was taken over by the German Reich’s finance administration in 1934. After World War II, it became the home of Der Senator für Finanzen when the state of Bremen was established. Today it stands as a symbol of Bremen’s resilience and financial management.
