Ever wondered how time and art intertwine? Here, before us stands the Millennium Dial Armillary. It’s more than just a timepiece. It’s a tribute to time itself. The Millennium Dial Armillary serves three purposes. It tells time. It commemorates time. It honors the Rotary Club’s work.
This armillary was given to Sutton in 2000 by the Rotary Club. It marks the new millennium. It also recognizes the generosity of the people of the London Borough of Sutton. They supported Rotary Charities. Several Rotary Clubs joined forces for this project. These included Cheam, Carshalton, and Sutton Nonsuch.
Take a closer look at the plinth. The inscription reads “Service Above Self”. This is the Rotary motto. The plinth also acknowledges sponsors like Securicor plc and Holiday Inn Sutton London.
The London Borough of Sutton wanted time-related millennium projects. The Rotary Club responded by planning and funding this armillary. It was designed to last for years. Originally, it stood in a Millennium Garden. In 2011, the armillary was moved slightly. This was after the High Street was repaved. Now, it stands on the edge of the new central square. It is right in front of Waterstones bookshop. Sunlight was a key factor in choosing the new spot.
In 2012, the Millennium Dial Armillary was temporarily removed. It had come off its plinth. The local press even reported that “Time stops in Sutton High Street after Armillary removed.”
The armillary has become a focal point for the town center. It marks the new millennium. It also commemorates the Rotary’s role in Sutton since 1923. The Millennium Dial Armillary is one of six public art pieces in Sutton’s town center. Others include the Sutton heritage mosaic and the Messenger statue.
Armillary spheres have ancient roots. They were used to track celestial orbits. The ancient Greeks and Chinese developed them. Though telescopes made them obsolete, they remain beautiful. They are a testament to human understanding of the universe.
Consider the armillary’s design. Rings revolve around each other. They circle the Earth or the sun. These rings represent circles of celestial spheres. One ring acts as the equator. An arrow pierces it marking the Earth’s axis.
The Millennium Dial Armillary is more than metal and stone. It represents community, history, and the passage of time. As you leave, remember this monument. It is a symbol of Sutton’s spirit. It marks the past and looks to the future.
