Here at Most Holy Trinity Parish Church history whispers from every stone. It stands as a testament to faith. The church began as a humble cemetery chapel in the 1880s.
Imagine Balic-Balic then. It was a quiet area within Sampaloc Manila. The Ayuntamiento de Ciudad de Manila needed a new cemetery. The existing one was full. Father Ramon Caviedas selected these highlands. In 1890 a small funerary chapel rose. It was accessible only via Calle de Balic-Balic.
Then came upheaval. The 1896 Revolution swept through. The old cemetery was destroyed. But this new highland cemetery remained. It became a strategic site during the American invasion. In 1899 the Battle of Balic-Balic raged. It marked the start of the Philippine-American War. Destruction visited even this sacred ground.
The American Health Institute finally shut down the cemetery in 1913. By 1925 it was closed completely. The area transformed. Mansions and urban subdivisions replaced graves. Parishioners had to travel to Nuestra Señora de Loreto for mass.
But faith finds a way. Archbishop Michael Doherty permitted the chapel’s reconstruction. Daily masses began again from 1925 to 1928. In 1932 the Iglesia de Santissima Trinidad was officially established. Parishioners and prominent families contributed greatly. The Legarda family even donated a bell.
The church proudly displayed an image of the Most Holy Trinity. Don Basilio J Murillo donated this image carved by Talleres Maximo Vicente. Silvina de Guzman recalled her husband Restituto Villanueva a painter. He assisted in painting the image.
Msgr Isidro Jose became parish priest in 1962. He oversaw the construction of a larger church. The school expanded. Community engagement grew. The Block Rosary and annual parish fiesta committees flourished.
The devotion to the Holy Trinity deepened. It became a cornerstone of the community’s spiritual life. This reverence united parishioners. It emphasized the triune nature of God. The devotion fostered a strong sense of community. It guided Balic-Balic through decades.
In 2006 a complementary devotion arose. It was to Nuestra Señora de la Santisima Trinidad. Father Enrico Martin Adoviso initiated this. On August 15 2018 a new altar image was unveiled. Willy Layug carved it. It was enthroned in the parish.
Today the devotion continues. The Feast of the Santisima Trinidad de Balic-Balic is observed every Trinity Sunday. The Sayaw Santatlo is performed by devotees during the procession. The Most Holy Trinity Parish Church stands as a symbol. It symbolizes faith. It symbolizes community. It symbolizes enduring devotion in the heart of Manila. It connects past and present.
