Did the Bürgerpark always have its charming heart? Let me tell you a tale about the Schweizerhaus, nestled within Bremen’s Bürgerpark. This isn’t just any building. The Schweizerhaus has been the beating heart of this park since 1872. It stands as a testament to the vision of the Bürgerparkverein, a group dedicated to creating a green oasis for the city. The Schweizerhaus, designed by Jacob Carl Scheinpflug, embodies the charm of the Swiss chalet style, popular during the era of Historicism. It started as a somewhat square building, meant as a home for the park director, and briefly housed the park association’s administration. Imagine Carl F.H.A. Ohrt, the first park director, living and working here for 24 years! The inscription on the gable of the Schweizerhaus captures the spirit of its creation. It translates to: “What civic spirit can create for us, this house here shows it to everyone. Take, reader, an example from it.” This highlights the importance of community and donations. Even the Schweizerhaus itself was built thanks to 1,500 gold talers in donations. A significant portion of this sum came from a generous money broker named Heinrich Christian Dieckmann. Over the years, the Schweizerhaus has seen several additions. In 1884, architect Heinrich Müller designed a rear addition. A few years later, in 1889, Hermann Deetjen designed another addition with two more rooms. The charming ornament on the triangular part of the roof was added in 1886. The Schweizerhaus has been witness to changing times. In 1970, the cozy warmth of oil heating finally arrived. A major modernization happened in 1989/90, bringing the Schweizerhaus into the modern era while preserving its historic charm. So, the next time you admire the Schweizerhaus, remember its journey.
