Picture this a sprawling 19th-century suburb nestled in northern Edinburgh. This is Trinity a place where grand mansions and Victorian terraces stand side by side. Trinity’s story begins with Trinity House in Leith. This institution owned the land that would become Trinity. They had a large estate farm Trinity Mains. The farm’s coat of arms remains visible on a building in Newhaven.

Trinity wasn’t always the vibrant neighborhood it is today. Although some buildings date back to the 18th century its major development occurred in the early 1800s. Wealthy families from Edinburgh’s New Town built second homes here. These served as country retreats offering a peaceful escape from city life.

Think of the elegant homes along East Trinity Road. They tell a story of change. Original mansions coexist with Victorian terraces tenements cottages and modern developments. Craighall Crescent is another example of this eclectic mix. It showcases a blend of Victorian and later buildings. The area’s desirability has led to continuous development reflecting its evolving character.

Boswall Road holds some intriguing history. Numbers 17 to 23 were built in 1815. The westernmost wing once belonged to Sir Alexander Boswall. He also built Wardie House a building whose northeast wing remains today. The central and eastern blocks of numbers 17 to 23 served as the Pollock Missionary School.

Then there’s Wardie Lodge later renamed Challenger Lodge. Sir John Murray the renowned explorer named it after his Challenger Expedition. This lodge now forms part of St Columba’s Hospice. Trinity’s history also includes the Trinity Chain Pier. From 1821 to 1898 it served ferries and later swimmers. The old booking office survives today as a pub.

Trinity Academy one of Edinburgh’s older schools stands as a testament to the area’s evolution. It was originally called Craighall Road Public School and was built in 1894. While the original Trinity Cottage has been demolished its legacy is not forgotten. The site is now occupied by modern townhouses. Only a wall and a small lodge remain.

Trinity’s past is rich and layered a blend of grand estates and modest homes. It offers a glimpse into Edinburgh’s history and its continuous growth. So explore its diverse streets and discover the unique stories hidden within its walls. Each building breathes a piece of Trinity’s fascinating past.
