Why is this avenue named after a general? Avenue du Général Frère is more than just a street. It’s a journey through time and a tribute to a hero. This avenue in Lyon tells a story of military service resistance and remembrance.

Avenue du Général Frère starts at Place du Bachut. It runs east toward the edge of Lyon. The avenue ends at Boulevard Pinel. Then it extends into Bron and Venissieux. There it becomes the Chemin des Balmes. It leads to the Bois and Parc de Parilly.

This avenue has a history dating back to the old regime. Back then it was known as the Chemin de la Guillotière to Saint Priest. In the 19th century, houses began to line the street. Some of these original houses still stand today.

Aubert Frère the man honored by the avenue was born in 1881. He died in 1944. Frère had a distinguished military career. In 1940 he became the military governor of Lyon. Later he commanded the army’s resistance organization. Sadly he was arrested in 1943 and deported. He died in the Struthof camp. Frère paid the ultimate price for his commitment.

Look around at the architecture of Avenue du Général Frère. The Maison de la Danse stands tall near Place du Bachut. It is a circular building next to the town hall and police station. Further down you will see a mix of buildings. Some are modern some date back to the 20th century.

Notice the Maison du Peuple at number 147. It was founded in 1922 by war veterans. Today it is a social center named after Gisèle Halimi.
