Hidden within the seemingly ordinary landscape of Northwood, London, lies the Permanent Joint Headquarters, or PJHQ as it’s often called. This isn’t just another office building. It’s the nerve center of Britain’s military operations abroad. Established in 1996, the Permanent Joint Headquarters was designed to streamline the UK’s ability to respond to international events. It brought together the Royal Navy, British Army, and Royal Air Force under one roof at Northwood Headquarters. This location, steeped in military history, has been an RAF site since 1938. Originally the grounds of Eastbury Park, the site evolved from housing RAF Coastal Command during World War II to becoming the central hub for planning and executing overseas operations. The Permanent Joint Headquarters doesn’t control everything. Matters like the UK’s nuclear deterrent, home defense, and Northern Ireland operations are handled elsewhere. PJHQ focuses on coordinating joint and multinational operations overseas. Think of it as the central command point for missions like Operation Veritas in Afghanistan in 2001, Operation Telic in Iraq in 2003, and the more recent Operation Pitting, the evacuation from Kabul. Over 600 people work within the Permanent Joint Headquarters, a mix of military personnel from all three services, civil servants, and specialized experts. They are organized into divisions, each responsible for a specific area, from personnel and intelligence to logistics and legal affairs. The Permanent Joint Headquarters even has its own deployable unit, the Joint Force Headquarters. This rapid response team can be sent anywhere in the world at short notice. In 2010, a new building at Northwood brought all PJHQ staff under one roof for the first time. This modernized facility reflects the ever-evolving nature of the Permanent Joint Headquarters as it adapts to new challenges in the world. The Permanent Joint Headquarters is more than just a building; it represents the UK’s commitment to global security and its ability to respond to crises around the world.
