“Politics is history taking place in the present.” This quote from Ernst Thälmann greets visitors to the Ernst-Thälmann-Gedenkstätte in Dresden.

Right here at Strehlener Platz stands a tribute to a controversial figure. The Ernst-Thälmann-Gedenkstätte commemorates Ernst Thälmann. He was a leader of the German Communist Party or KPD.

This memorial was created by Johannes Peschel. It was unveiled in April 1986. The unveiling coincided with the 100th anniversary of Thälmann’s birth.

Before 1990, this square was named Ernst-Thälmann-Platz. The Ernst-Thälmann-Gedenkstätte sits between Teplitzer Straße and August-Bebel-Straße.

Thälmann led the KPD during the Weimar Republic. He aimed to transform it into a new kind of party. This was in line with the Communist International’s rules. The KPD saw the Social Democrats as their main foe. This was because of the Soviet-backed social-fascism theory. Thälmann was arrested in March 1933 shortly after the Reichstag fire. He was held for over eleven years. He was executed in August 1944. Hitler likely gave the order.

Today this place invites reflection. It encourages us to consider Thälmann’s life. His legacy is complex. It shows a turbulent period in German history. The Ernst-Thälmann-Gedenkstätte stands as a place for remembrance and education. It prompts dialogue about political ideologies and their consequences. It is a reminder of the past. It also encourages a deeper understanding of the present.
