Seven hundred square meters of history whisper secrets. This is Villa Rauch in Bremen. Built in 1871 by Heinrich Muller for the merchant Johann Christoph Gottlieb Rauch it stands as a testament to the era’s architectural splendor. Its classicist style embodies the spirit of historicism. Initially known as Villa Fuchsberg a playful nickname reflecting fox dens found on the grounds it later became Haus Richardson in 1923. John Richardson owner of Nordsee Fischerei Bremerhaven acquired it then. The villa’s story unfolds. It passed to a Wilhelmshaven bank then to the German Reich in 1937. It served as an officers’ casino and a post-war children’s home. In 1983 a youth community project took over. They cared for severely disabled people. They moved to new buildings in 2012. An energy company renovated Villa Rauch in 2014-2015. Architect Uwe Meier added a top floor. Bremen’s State Office for Monument Preservation approved this despite concerns. Preservation was prioritized ensuring continued use. Today Energiequelle GmbH uses the main house. They previously had their headquarters in St Magnus. A new building stands beside the villa. The original gardener’s house remains. It is two stories high. It has a T-shaped floor plan and is also used by the energy company. This is Villa Rauch a site infused with layers of history. It reflects Bremen’s past its resilience and its forward-looking spirit. The villa is a story waiting to be discovered piece by piece.
