Were classrooms once bedrooms? Standing here, before the stately Whitby Hall, it’s easy to forget its former life. Built in 1914, Whitby Hall wasn’t always just a place for learning. Originally known as College Hall, it housed St. Kate’s burgeoning student population. Imagine hallways bustling with students, not heading to class, but to their dorm rooms. Whitby Hall was more than bedrooms. It housed the art and science departments, the Jeanne d’Arc Auditorium, even a gymnasium and parlor. Over time, academics took precedence. Classrooms and offices slowly filled Whitby Hall, the echoes of student life fading with each passing year. Finally, in 2012, the last students moved out, leaving Whitby Hall to its scholarly pursuits.
