The Kimmelmannschule’s journey began in the 1960s in Oberreut. It was a newly constructed district. Later, the school briefly moved to Hardtstrasse in Mühlburg. But its story doesn’t end there.
In 2001 and 2002, a decision was made to unite two schools. These were the Schwarzwaldschule-Forderschule and the Kimmelmannschule. Both schools’ staff agreed to keep the name Kimmelmannschule. This was to honor Alois Kimmelmann. He was a pedagogue who greatly contributed to rebuilding the school system after the war.
On September 28, 2004, the two schools moved to Graf-Rhena-Strasse 18. The building had been completely renovated. This marked a new chapter for the Kimmelmannschule. The Kimmelmannschule became a special educational support center. Its focus was on learning.
However, the Kimmelmannschule’s story took another turn. At the end of the 2018/2019 school year, it was dissolved. The Kimmelmannschule’s district was divided between the Lidellschule and the Vogesenschule. The Karlsruhe City Council decided this in March 2019. This decision followed a recommendation from the School Advisory Board.
Despite its closure, the Kimmelmannschule achieved significant recognition. In 2009, it received the Boris-Berufswahlsiegel. This award recognized the school’s efforts in career guidance.
The Kimmelmannschule received the Berufswahlsiegel again in 2012. It successfully participated in the recertification round. This seal of approval highlighted the school’s commitment to preparing students for their future careers.
In 2018, the Kimmelmannschule won the German Climate Prize. The Allianz-Umweltstiftung awarded it for their energy-saving song. The award ceremony took place in Berlin. Before that, there was an invitation to Schloss Bellevue. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier personally congratulated the students.
Today, the Kimmelmannschule may no longer function as it once did. But its legacy remains. It stands as a reminder of dedication to special education.
