Established in 2021 AFC Whyteleafe rose from the ashes of Whyteleafe FC. This phoenix club plays at the historic Church Road ground. It’s a story of resilience and community spirit.
The Church Road ground itself has a rich history. Once farmland its buildings were transformed into a clubhouse and dressing rooms. Whyteleafe FC initially planned a running track and cricket pitch. Those plans were abandoned. Floodlights arrived in the early 1980s. A new main stand was added in 1999 for the club’s first FA Cup match against Chester City. That game drew a record 2164 spectators. Some turnstiles even came from Stoke City’s Victoria Ground after their move to the Britannia Stadium in 1997.
The story of AFC Whyteleafe is inextricably linked to Kelly Waters. Waters tried to buy the Church Road premises before Irama Sports did in February 2021. He was a week too late. Inspired by AFC Wimbledon’s success Waters founded AFC Whyteleafe. He secured a four-year deal with Irama to use Church Road.
The club’s first season was a success. AFC Whyteleafe then merged with Whyteleafe Youth FC and Whyteleafe Women. This created one club with men’s and women’s teams plus youth teams from U7 to U18.
AFC Whyteleafe’s rise through the leagues has been impressive. They joined the Southern Counties East League Division One in 2022. They finished 8th in their first season. The next season they were promoted as champions. This is a testament to their players and coaches.
The club has achieved impressive victories. They beat SC Thamesmead 7-0 and Chipstead 7-0. Their top players like Aaron Watson have scored many goals. Watson holds the club record of 55 goals. He also scored 31 goals in one season a remarkable feat. The club’s top appearances record is held by Alton Leeward with 108 appearances.
