SMK Dato Penggawa Timur

On a sweltering August day in 1965, SMK Dato’ Penggawa Timur began its journey. Not within its own walls, mind you, but nestled within the classrooms of Sekolah Kebangsaan Masai. Imagine 77 students and seven dedicated teachers, sharing space and resources, laying the foundation for what SMK Dato’ Penggawa Timur would become. The school’s original name was Sekolah Menengah Masai. The current name, SMK Dato’ Penggawa Timur, honors a historical figure, the Dato’ Penggawa Timur, a representative of the Sultan of Johor. He was responsible for administering and overseeing security in the eastern part of Johor, including the Masai area, starting in 1883. Over the years, SMK Dato’ Penggawa Timur grew. New blocks were added. Graha Temenggung arose in 1978 with additional classrooms and science labs. A library and a surau followed. The Dewan Penggawa, a large hall, and workshops were built in 1982. These additions provided more space for the growing student body. In 1990, Graha Syahbandar was built, housing science labs, an art room, and a counseling room. The three-story Graha Panglima provided more classrooms and science labs in 1991. Finally, Graha Bentara was constructed, thanks to contributions from the school’s Parent-Teacher Association. The name officially changed to SMK Dato’ Penggawa Timur in 1986. The school continued to evolve, introducing science classes and, later, pre-university classes. The last building constructed was a computer lab, completed in 2004. SMK Dato’ Penggawa Timur even has its own school song, emphasizing the values of effort, service, and the pursuit of knowledge. The classrooms themselves are named after precious gems like diamonds, rubies, and emeralds, inspiring students to strive for excellence.
