Ever wondered about the secrets held within a seemingly ordinary plaza? Welcome to Plaza Doctor Roque Sáenz Peña a green haven in the heart of Buenos Aires. This isn’t just any plaza. It holds a rich history dating back to 1937 when it was officially created by ordinance number 9092.

Before becoming the tranquil space we see today this land belonged to the Colegio Cabrini. Imagine a high wall enclosing a lush grove with a hidden grotto. The neighbors themselves tore down that wall in 1937. They eagerly transformed the area into the plaza we know and love respecting its ancient trees.

Dr Roque Sáenz Peña the plaza’s namesake was a remarkable figure. He served as President of Argentina from 1910 to 1914. He’s best remembered for enacting the Law of Universal Suffrage a groundbreaking achievement for its time. The plaza stands as a tribute to his legacy and his commitment to democratic ideals.

Take a closer look at the plaza’s landscape. Note the double rows of casuarina trees their branches reaching towards the sky. There’s a majestic ombú tree too. And you’ll find eucalyptus trees poplars and ceibos. In spring the many apple trees burst with pink blossoms.

The centerpiece of the plaza is a beautiful fountain. It once was deep enough for children to use as a swimming pool. Can you imagine that? However the risks involved led to its bottom being filled with marble remnants from the Chacarita Cemetery. This led to many ghost stories some say.

A more recent addition is a striking monument to the legendary guitarist Norberto Pappo Napolitano. It’s called Absence and Presence a poignant tribute created by artist Virginia Caramel. It’s said that Pappo’s ashes and those of his father rest within this metal sculpture.

There’s also a carousel. The Pascualito named after a former carousel operator who previously worked in Plaza Garay. It’s a charming addition to the plaza’s family-friendly atmosphere. A smaller playground the Plazoleta Mercedes San Martín de Balcarce extends the fun for children.

Plaza Doctor Roque Sáenz Peña is more than just a park. It’s a living testament to history. It’s a place where the past and present intertwine. It’s a place where you can relax. You can remember the past while you enjoy the present. It’s a true gem of Buenos Aires.
