Did Camille Alphonse Trézel ever imagine his name would grace a street in Levallois-Perret? Here we stand on Rue Trézel, a seemingly ordinary street, yet its very name whispers tales of a life intertwined with French military history. Rue Trézel isn’t just a street. It’s a thread connecting us to a man who walked the halls of power and the battlefields of Europe and North Africa. Trézel, born in Paris in 1780, began his military career as a draftsman. He rose through the ranks, serving in the Napoleonic Wars, the Morea expedition, and the French conquest of Algeria. He even survived a shot to the eye at the Battle of Ligny. He served as Minister for War under King Louis-Philippe, reaching the pinnacle of his career. Yet, Rue Trézel also carries the echoes of a significant setback. In Algeria, Trézel suffered a disastrous defeat at the Battle of Macta. Despite this, he took full responsibility, a testament to his character. He later returned to Algeria, participating in the capture of Constantine. Wounded again, he returned to France, his active military career drawing to a close. Trézel’s journey ended in 1860, but his legacy lives on, etched in the name of this street. Rue Trézel reminds us that even in the quiet corners of a city, history lingers, waiting to be rediscovered.
