High above the Parisian streets stands Notre-Dame-des-Airs. Its unique history unfolds not in the heart of the city but on the outskirts in Saint-Cloud.

Notre-Dame-des-Airs isn’t just any church. This Anglo-Norman style building boasts a fascinating past. Construction began in 1913 and finished in 1919. Architect Georges Benezech designed this beautiful church. Initially a small chapel it later became a parish church.

Cardinal Léon Amette blessed Notre-Dame-des-Airs. He declared it would provide special protection for aviators. Many planes flew over the area. The church’s name perfectly reflects this. It means Our Lady of the Air.

The interior is stunning. Beautiful stained glass windows by Ludovic Alleaume adorn the space. They bathe the church in colorful light. Sadly the original Virgin Mary statue on the bell tower was destroyed by lightning in 1951. The bell tower itself however still holds symbolic meaning. It features carvings. These include an angel praying and depictions of the demons of greed and pride.

In 2019 the church celebrated its centennial. Bishop Rougé of Nanterre presided over the celebrations. More recently in September 2024 a new altar was consecrated. Notre-Dame-des-Airs continues to be a place of worship. It serves as a quiet sanctuary. It is a testament to the history of aviation and faith in Saint-Cloud.

The church bells Marie-Geneviève and Julie-Alexandrine ring out. Their sound echoes the prayers of generations. They serve as a reminder of the church’s enduring presence. So take a moment to appreciate this unique Parisian landmark. It’s a beautiful reminder of history and faith. Notre-Dame-des-Airs awaits your visit.
