Masjid Jami Asy-Syarief wasn’t always this grand. The idea for a city-owned grand mosque was first proposed in 2012 by Joko Widodo then Governor of Jakarta. Construction began in June 2013 under Ahok. It was a monumental undertaking. The mosque embodies the concept of a Betawi bapang house. Its unique design features a triangular roof and intricate tooth ornaments. The building’s layout forms the letter ‘T’ with a central space dedicated to prayer.

The mosque cost US$12.8 million to build. It opened its doors on April 15 2017. President Joko Widodo himself inaugurated the mosque. It was a momentous occasion for Jakarta. The mosque is the first fully operated by the city administration. This shows Jakarta’s commitment to its Muslim community.
