Hidden within Dalston’s vibrant tapestry lies the Arcola Theatre. A former paint factory on Ashwin Street transformed into a beacon of creativity. The Arcola Theatre wasn’t always here. It began its life in 2000 on Arcola Street, a former textile factory. The founders, Mehmet Ergen and Leyla Nazli, envisioned a space for both emerging and established artists. Imagine the clatter of sewing machines replaced by the hush of an expectant audience. The Arcola thrived, earning accolades like the Peter Brook Empty Space Award. It even sent a production, “Mojo Mickey,” to the West End’s Trafalgar Studios. But progress, in the form of luxury apartments, forced the Arcola to move in 2011. The new home on Ashwin Street presented its own set of challenges and opportunities. The Arcola Theatre embraced its new life. It launched the Grimeborn opera and musical theatre festival. This festival now runs for six weeks each summer. The Arcola also embarked on a remarkable journey to become the world’s first carbon-neutral theatre. This “Green Arcola” project reflects the theatre’s commitment to sustainability. They even have Arcola Energy. This research project, located on the top floor, develops and markets hydrogen fuel cells. The profits help subsidize community arts projects. In 2021, the Arcola expanded further with Arcola Outside, also on Ashwin Street. The Arcola Theatre stands as a testament to the transformative power of art. It is a symbol of resilience. It showcases a commitment to both artistic innovation and environmental responsibility.
