Question: What if a few deer and mountain lions sparked a Texas-sized legacy? That’s precisely how the Dallas Zoo began in 1888. It is the oldest and largest zoo in Texas.

Initially, the Dallas Zoo acquired two deer and two mountain lions. The Dallas City Council purchased them for $60 from a Colorado seller. These first animals were housed in City Park.

Fast forward to today. The Dallas Zoo stretches across 106 acres. It houses over 2,000 animals. These animals represent 406 species. You can find this incredible place just 3 miles south of downtown Dallas in Marsalis Park.

The Dallas Zoo has moved a couple of times. It called City Park home until 1910. Then it moved to Fair Park. In 1912, it found its permanent home in Marsalis Park.

In the 1920s, the zoo benefited from a special commission. This commission helped acquire animals from Frank Buck. Buck was a well-known game hunter and trapper.

The Dallas Zoological Society was established in 1955. It supports the zoo’s mission.

By the 1980s, the Dallas Zoo shifted its focus. It emphasized scientific research and humane animal treatment. This aligned with the AZA’s guidelines. The zoo achieved accreditation in 1985.

Today, the Dallas Zoo is divided into two main areas. There is ZooNorth and Wilds of Africa. ZooNorth is the original section. Wilds of Africa came later. It features diverse habitats. These habitats include a rain forest and a savanna.

One popular exhibit is the Giants of the Savanna. It opened in 2010. It mixes elephants with giraffes and zebras. It recreates an African landscape.

Another interesting area is the Chimpanzee Forest. Chimpanzees can fish for treats. They use sticks to get peanut butter and honey.

The Dallas Zoo actively participates in conservation. It is involved in over 40 Species Survival Plans. These plans aim to protect endangered animals.

Visitors can experience a monorail ride. The Wilds of Africa Adventure Safari lasts 20 minutes. It offers aerial views of various animal exhibits.

The Dallas Zoo even has a conservation connection through cell phone recycling. The ECO-CELL program reduces habitat loss for gorillas.

Over the years, the Dallas Zoo has faced challenges. There have been animal escapes and unfortunate incidents. However, safety measures have been improved. The zoo continues to prioritize animal welfare.

In recent years, the Dallas Zoo has achieved milestones. It welcomed over one million visitors in 2015. New exhibits like the Simmons Hippo Outpost continue to excite guests.

So, as you explore the Dallas Zoo today, remember its humble beginnings. From a few animals in a city park to a leading conservation center, the Dallas Zoo’s story is one of growth, change, and a deep commitment to the natural world.
