Here before us stands the Lake Street-Marshall Avenue Bridge, often called the Black Lake Bridge. This concrete marvel connects Minneapolis and St. Paul.

The Black Lake Bridge replaced an older wrought-iron bridge. That old bridge was built in 1889. It stood as the second-oldest Mississippi bridge, just behind St. Louis’ Eads Bridge.

Back then, the Minneapolis Tribune scoffed. It called the new bridge a “foolish extravagance.” Seven bridges already spanned the river, they argued. Yet, the Black Lake Bridge became a vital link. It carried U.S. Route 212 before the freeway era.

Construction of the new Black Lake Bridge began in 1989. Builders cleverly constructed half the new bridge. All the while, the old bridge stayed open for traffic.

Tragedy struck during construction. The falsework for an arch collapsed on April 24, 1990. The arch itself crumbled. Construction worker Robert A. Moser lost his life.

Demolishing the old bridge proved difficult. The initial explosives failed. A more powerful blast finally brought it down weeks later.

Locals in St. Paul often call it the Marshall Avenue Bridge. Whatever you call it, this bridge plays a crucial role.

Howard, Needles, Tammen, and Bergendoff designed this structure. It stretches 1,484 feet long. Its width spans 76 feet. The longest arch spans 555.5 feet. Clearance below reaches 66 feet.

Completed in 1992, the Black Lake Bridge stands as a testament to modern engineering. It replaced a relic of the 19th century. The old bridge carried history. But this new bridge offers wider lanes and safer passage.

Before this bridge, travelers relied on an 1889 wrought-iron structure. Imagine horse-drawn carriages and early automobiles. They slowly crossed the Mississippi. The new bridge ushered in an era of efficient travel.

Think about the debates surrounding the Black Lake Bridge. Some called it unnecessary. Others saw its potential. Today, we know it as a vital connection. It links two major cities. The Black Lake Bridge is more than just concrete and steel. It represents progress.

So as you cross the Black Lake Bridge. Remember its history. Reflect on the lives it impacts daily. This bridge is not just a path. It is a connection. It is a symbol of our ever-evolving urban landscape.
