Amidst the bustling cityscape of Buenos Aires, rises the Torre Alem Plaza, a steel-and-glass titan whispering tales of ambition and tragedy. Torre Alem Plaza and its near-twin, Catalinas Plaza, dominate the Catalinas Norte skyline. They were a dream of Eduardo Costantini and his firm, Consultatio S.A. In the mid-1990s, Costantini envisioned a pair of modern office towers. He commissioned the renowned architectural firm, Peralta Ramos SEPRA, in partnership with Felipe Tarsitano, to bring this vision to life. First came Catalinas Plaza, completed in 1995. Then, its taller sibling, Torre Alem Plaza, began to rise, boasting five additional floors. The year was 1998. The construction of Torre Alem Plaza, however, was marred by a devastating incident. On May 19th, a tragic accident claimed the lives of six construction workers when a hoist plummeted from the 24th floor. The city mourned, construction halted as workers went on strike. Legal proceedings ensued, further delaying the project. Eventually, Torre Alem Plaza reached completion in late 1998. The tower stands as a testament to both progress and loss. Torre Alem Plaza offers a staggering 38,000 square meters of covered space, a significant portion of which, 25,800 square meters, is dedicated to leasable office space spread across 31 floors. Each floor offers a vast, open-plan area of 900 square meters. The tower features two basement levels providing parking for 512 vehicles. Its ground floor houses a bank branch and a restaurant. Ten high-speed elevators facilitate movement within this vertical city. Torre Alem Plaza’s sleek, postmodern design is defined by its dark, polarized glass curtain wall, reflecting the dynamic city around it. The entrances on each of the tower’s four sides are marked by distinctive golden porticoes. Connected to Catalinas Plaza by a shared hall, Torre Alem Plaza stands as a symbol of resilience and a reminder of the human cost of progress in the heart of Buenos Aires.
