The Weyerhaeuser Memorial Chapel sits on the edge of a small, green moat. It is a strange combination of glassy, corporate exterior with a modest, contemplative interior. The chapel is a gift from the F.T. Weyerhaeuser family and opened its doors in 1969. It is a space for worship but also hosts lectures, art and music events, and other community events. Built with natural materials like handmade banners, natural woven fabrics, and brick screens, it is simple and effective. The wood trusses overhead add something dramatic to the design and the abundance of natural light makes it a warm and inviting space. The chapel has become a landmark on the Macalester College campus and a symbol of the school’s commitment to religious and spiritual life. It is a place where people of all faiths are welcome.
