Three brothers. Three lives cut short. This is Rue des Trois Frères Carasso. Their sacrifice echoes here in Marseille. This street bears their name a testament to their courage during World War II.

Rue des Trois Frères Carasso isn’t just a street. It’s a living memorial. It tells the story of Jean René and Roger Carasso three brothers who gave their lives for France. Jean a 31-year-old union leader was executed at Mont Valérien. René 22 deported to Germany disappeared in Auschwitz. Young Roger 17 fought bravely in Marseille falling on August 22 1944 at Place Castellane.

Before its current name the street was Rue du Jardin-des-Plantes. A botanical garden once flourished there a remnant from the 18th-century Chartreux estate. In 1858 the garden was destroyed to make way for a railway line. The memory of the garden is now almost erased. Only old maps recall its existence.

The street’s current name chosen in 1946 honors the Carasso brothers. Their story reminds us of the human cost of war. Their commitment to their ideals is ingrained in the very fabric of this street. It’s a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made for freedom.
