Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Carlsberg City, Bohrs Tårn ascends, a modern sentinel reaching for the Copenhagen sky. Bohrs Tårn stands as a testament to innovative architecture and urban development. This striking 100-meter skyscraper, completed in 2017, isn’t just a residential tower. Its first eight floors seamlessly integrate with the UCC Campus Carlsberg, a bustling hub of learning and innovation. Bohrs Tårn’s presence has dramatically altered Copenhagen’s skyline. The tower takes its name from the adjacent street, which in turn honors the renowned Danish physicist, Niels Bohr. This connection to scientific legacy resonates within the building itself. The lower levels house the University College of Capital (UCC), fostering a spirit of inquiry and discovery. Above, 88 exclusive apartments, four per floor, offer breathtaking views of the city. These residences, ranging from 114 to 166 square meters, are accessible via a separate entrance and elevator system on the south facade. The tower also houses offices, cafes, and shops at the ground level, creating a vibrant mixed-use space. Bohrs Tårn occupies the site of a former Carlsberg production hall and railway station. A vestige of the past remains in the preserved west facade, “De Hæ ngende Haver” (The Hanging Gardens) from 1969, which overlooks J.C. Jacobsen’s Garden. The tower’s design, a collaborative effort by Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects, CCO, Nord Architects, Cobe, and EFFEKT, reflects both modernity and its historical context. Its facade, composed of light elements with perforated aluminum sheets, interacts with the changing daylight and seasons, creating a dynamic visual experience. The brown hue of the facade echoes the existing protected buildings in the Carlsberg City area. However, Bohrs Tårn’s distinct appearance hasn’t been without its critics. Some have criticized its architectural quality and imposing character, even labeling it an “eyesore”. Despite these criticisms, Bohrs Tårn remains a prominent feature in Copenhagen’s evolving cityscape, a symbol of the city’s ambition and its commitment to integrating modern development with historical heritage.
