In 1862 a group of dedicated people formed the Hastedter Kirchenbauverein. Their dream? A new church for their community. That same year the Hastedter Kirche opened its doors. This wasn’t just any church. It was a symbol of hope and faith for the burgeoning neighborhood. The Hastedter Kirche is a beautiful example of neo-Gothic architecture. Its central eastern tower soars 29 meters high topped with an octagonal spire.
The Hastedter Kirche’s history is rich. The independent Evangelical parish of Hastedt wasn’t formed until 1867. Five years after the church itself was consecrated. The first pastor Ernst Christian Achelis took his post in 1868. He later became a professor at Philipps University in Marburg. His son Hans also a professor of theology was born in Hastedt. The Hastedter Kirche stands as a testament to their legacy. A reminder of their faith and dedication.
The Hastedter Kirche wasn’t untouched by the ravages of time and war. It underwent renovations in 1926. Sadly the church suffered damage during World War II. The original paintings from the 1926 restoration were lost. Yet the church persevered. In 1951 a new baptismal font created by the Bremer sculptor Klaus Bücking was added. New bells joined the church in 1951 and 1953. A new chancel followed in 1962.
The Hastedter Kirche’s interior is equally noteworthy. In 1973 Rudolf Janke from Bovenden built a new organ. This magnificent instrument features mechanical slider chests. It boasts 23 stops spread across two manuals and pedals. Three spires flanking two shorter pipe fields complete the aesthetic. The organ’s presence enhances the church’s atmosphere. It enriches the spiritual experience for worshippers.
Today the congregation thrives as the Kirchengemeinde Alt-Hastedt. It offers various activities for people of all ages. This includes senior groups women’s groups youth groups and children’s groups. A brass band a church choir and a children’s choir ensure the sounds of music fill the church. The Hastedter Kirche is more than a building. It is a vibrant community center. It is a symbol of faith and resilience in the heart of Bremen. The Hastedter Kirche continues to serve its purpose. It continues to provide a spiritual haven for generations to come.
