How does a church resemble a fish? You might think that’s an absurd question. But if you look at the blueprints of St. Hedwig here in Bremen, you’ll see exactly that! The intriguing floor plan, shaped like a Eucharistic fish, a symbol of Christ, is a hidden gem only revealed in the architectural drawings.

St. Hedwig, completed in 1963, stands as a testament to the city’s post-war growth and the influx of Catholic communities. After World War II, Bremen saw an influx of refugees, particularly from regions like Silesia. These communities, often Catholic, sought solace and a sense of belonging in their new home. Recognizing this need, the Diocese of Osnabrück commissioned the construction of St. Hedwig.

The architects, Burlage and Niebuer, embraced the organic architecture movement, evident in the church’s flowing lines and the use of natural materials. Unlike the sharp angles and imposing structures of traditional churches, St. Hedwig welcomes you with gentle curves and the warmth of its red-brown brick facade. The interplay of light and shadow inside further elevates the spiritual atmosphere. While the windows may seem inconspicuous at first glance, they bathe the interior in a warm glow. A particular highlight is the captivating stained-glass window by Rudolf Kröger-Ohrbeck in the side chapel.

This colorful masterpiece depicts two significant biblical events – the burning bush and the Israelites’ miraculous crossing of the Red Sea. The church’s interior also houses a unique treasure – a relic of Saint Hedwig herself. This relic, a bone fragment from her arm, was a gift from the Bishop of Hildesheim and serves as a tangible connection to the church’s patron saint. Sadly, the originally planned freestanding tower never materialized due to financial constraints. Nevertheless, St. Hedwig stands as an architectural marvel. It’s a place where faith and design intertwine to create a truly awe-inspiring experience.
