Did you know that this street is named after a man who was once a wood turner? The Rue Charles Besse stands as a testament to a life dedicated to both craft and community.

Charles Besse was born in Paris in 1878. He wasn’t a king or a general. He was an ordinary man who lived through extraordinary times. Besse worked as a wood turner. Later he became an artisan. His hands shaped wood and his heart shaped his community.

Besse was politically active. He joined the Parti ouvrier socialiste révolutionnaire in 1893. He wrote for their press. He later left the SFIO at the start of World War I. Besse founded the union for wood turners and varnishers.

In the late 1920s, Besse settled in Thiais. He became the treasurer for the “mal lotis” of Thiais. These were people with housing problems. He ran for local elections in 1934. He led the Communist list in the 1935 elections. Three communists were elected: Charles Bardez, Charles Besse, and Émile Zimmerman.

Bardez resigned in 1939. Besse and Zimmerman were removed from their positions in 1940. This was due to their membership in the Communist Party.

Besse was the secretary-general of the Vieux travailleurs. This translates to old workers. He spoke at their national congress in 1938. He served on the local Liberation Committee. He also served on the provisional municipal council of Thiais.

In 1947, Besse regained his council seat. However he resigned in 1948 due to health reasons. Even then the Parisian police continued to monitor him.

The Rue Charles Besse was named in his honor. This happened on June 19, 1953. It was formerly called Voie des Pâquerettes. This was where he lived.

So as you walk along the Rue Charles Besse remember the man. He was a wood turner. He was a union founder. He was a community leader. He was Charles Besse a man of the people. His legacy lives on in the name of this street. It reminds us that ordinary people can make an extraordinary impact.
