Gazing across the Obere Ihleniederung, can you sense the echoes of a vanished landscape? This seemingly tranquil nature reserve, nestled west of Ritterhude and north of the B74, holds a secret history. The Obere Ihleniederung, established as a protected area in 1988, spans nearly 15 hectares. It’s a vital sanctuary, designated as NSG LÜ 161, preserving a unique ecosystem. The Ihle, a small stream meandering through the reserve, whispers tales of dramatic geological shifts. This valley was born from an earthfall. This earthfall was caused by the dissolving of an underground salt dome. Imagine a landscape transformed. A lowland moor emerged, evolving into a raised bog. The growing bog counteracted the sinking land, creating a peat layer up to eight meters thick. Sadly, much of this bog has disappeared due to peat extraction and drainage. Today, the Ihle flows through a shallow valley, bordered by damp meadows and woodlands. Patches of grassland, left fallow after the area’s protection, dot the landscape. The Obere Ihleniederung is a refuge for endangered plant species. It’s a testament to nature’s resilience and a reminder of the delicate balance we strive to maintain. The nearby Heerweger Moor and the source areas of the Ritterhuder Beeke further enrich this tapestry of protected landscapes. The Biological Station Osterholz actively manages and cares for this precious ecosystem, ensuring its continued survival for generations to come.
