“Oh, the stories these walls could tell!” I wonder, as we approach Reed’s School. Reed’s School stands as a testament to history and excellence. It is a leading independent day and boarding school for boys. The school now welcomes girls into the Sixth Form.
Founded in 1813 by Rev Dr Andrew Reed, Reed’s School began as the London Orphan Asylum. It was first located in Shoreditch. The school aimed to provide care and education for destitute children. These were children who had lost both parents or their father. Their mothers were unable to provide for them.
Imagine the early days of Reed’s School. With financial support from the City of London, the school grew. It moved to Clapton in 1825. Later, in 1871, Reed’s School relocated to Watford.
During World War II, Reed’s School faced significant changes. The boys were evacuated to Totnes in Devon. The girls went to Towcester in Northamptonshire. The school was renamed Reed’s School in 1939. After the war, in 1946, the boys found a new home in Cobham, Surrey. The girls moved to a separate school in Hampshire.
Today, Reed’s School continues its legacy on Sandy Lane. It educates over 800 pupils between 11 and 18. The school maintains its charitable foundation. Values such as respect, integrity, kindness, and compassion are instilled in students.
Royal patronage has been a long standing tradition. King George IV showed his support. Queen Elizabeth II acted as the school’s patron from 1951 until her death in 2022. She visited Reed’s School twice, in 1997 and 2014.
Reed’s School offers a broad academic curriculum. Specialist teachers guide pupils. The school has academies in tennis, skiing and golf. Sir Cliff Richard officially opened the Music School. It includes a recording studio and recital room.
Consider the alumni who have walked these halls. They are known as Old Reedonians. They have achieved success in various fields. From royalty to business, literature to sports, Reed’s School has shaped leaders and innovators. Tom Hardy once walked these halls.
