Established in 1854 CHIJ Secondary School boasts a rich history. It’s the oldest of eleven CHIJ schools in Singapore. Initially located at the corner of Bras Basah Road and Victoria Street the school served girls from all backgrounds. Orphans were welcomed alongside fee-paying students. This reflects the school’s dedication to providing education for all. The original building also housed an orphanage.

The school’s early years saw incredible growth. By 1862 enrollment had reached 145 students. Eighty-two received free education. The school was declared a government-aided school in 1881 a significant milestone. In 1902 enrollment increased to 300. Junior Cambridge examinations began. Secondary education started in 1905. A notable addition in 1909 was the Victoria Street chapel. This beautiful chapel stands as a testament to the school’s history and faith.

Commercial classes were introduced in 1920 a unique offering at the time. Domestic Science and Needlework were added to the curriculum showing a commitment to well-rounded education. The school’s Victoria Street location was bustling with activity. The school moved in 1983. This marked a transition to a new chapter for CHIJ Secondary School. The move to Toa Payoh was a significant change. It also led to the school being renamed Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus Toa Payoh. The school gained autonomous status in 1994.

The school was awarded the South Zone Centre of Excellence for Language and the Arts in 2007. This recognition highlights its dedication to academic excellence and the arts. The CHIJ Museum opened in 2012. It showcases the school’s rich history and traditions.
