Universidad Nacional de La Matanza

Founded on a dream of accessible education, the Universidad Nacional de La Matanza, UNLaM, stands as a testament to community perseverance. The seeds of UNLaM were sown in the 1970s, amidst a growing awareness of the educational disparity in La Matanza. Thousands of young people were forced to abandon their academic aspirations or endure long commutes to pursue higher education. By 1985, over 2,600 La Matanza residents were enrolled in the University of Buenos Aires’ Ciclo Básico Común, highlighting the urgent need for a local university. The return of democracy in 1983 ignited a spark of hope. Community commissions, student assemblies, and dedicated legislators championed the cause. Finally, on September 29, 1989, their efforts culminated in the passage of Law 23.748, officially establishing the Universidad Nacional de La Matanza. The university opened its doors on April 15, 1991, initially operating from local schools. Over 1,200 students enrolled in the first three degree programs, marking a historic moment for the community. Later that year, UNLaM acquired the former Chrysler factory site, transforming it into a vibrant campus. This strategic move symbolized the university’s commitment to revitalizing the region. The university later acquired a building in Buenos Aires for the Postgraduate School, further expanding its reach. UNLaM’s growth has been remarkable. Its budget increased by a staggering 820% in the decade following 2003. The university boasts a high retention rate of 90% and leads public universities in graduate numbers. UNLaM offers a diverse range of programs, with over forty undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Beyond academics, UNLaM fosters a vibrant campus life. Its impressive facilities include state-of-the-art classrooms, computer labs, a language lab, and even an on-campus radio station, Radio Universidad FM 89.1. The university also boasts a modern sports complex, complete with a running track, various playing fields, and a heated swimming pool. A dining hall, inaugurated in 2012, further enhances the student experience.
