Gazing upon the vastness of Csepel-Királymajor, one might wonder about its humble beginnings. Csepel-Királymajor, located on the northern tip of Csepel Island, is a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of its people. Csepel Island itself holds a special place in Hungarian history, named after Árpád’s horse groom. Árpád, the leader of the Magyar tribes, chose this island as his personal domain. It became a favored retreat for Hungarian kings and a treasured wedding gift for future queens.

Csepel-Királymajor’s story intertwines with that of the island. The island, a royal domain and later a haven for Serb refugees, has seen empires rise and fall. The Ottomans destroyed the original village and royal manor house. Prince Eugene of Savoy, owner of the island in the 18th century, re-established the settlement with German colonists. This vibrant mix of cultures shaped the island’s character. The great flood of 1838 then devastated the original village located in today’s freeport area. A new village was built on higher ground in present-day Ófalu (Old Village), marking a new chapter in Csepel-Királymajor’s history.

Csepel-Királymajor transformed into a bustling industrial hub with the founding of the Manfred Weiss Steel and Metal Works in 1893. This factory, later known as the Csepel Works, became one of Hungary’s largest machine factories and a major player in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. It fueled the local economy and drew workers from all over, contributing to the area’s growth.

The 20th century brought both prosperity and hardship. During World War II, the Weiss family emigrated, and their factory was taken over by Germany. After the war, the factory was nationalized and played a vital role in communist-era Hungary. Csepel Works produced a wide range of goods, from tubes and machinery to bicycles and motorcycles. The factory employed over 30,000 people at its peak.

Today, Csepel-Királymajor retains its unique blend of industrial heritage and community spirit. While the Csepel Works is no longer the industrial giant it once was, its legacy lives on in the memories of its former workers and in the repurposed factory spaces. Csepel-Királymajor stands as a symbol of transformation, reminding us that even in the face of adversity, communities can adapt and thrive. The story of Csepel-Királymajor is not just a tale of industry, but a testament to the human spirit.
