Gazing down Avenue Félix Éboué, did you ever imagine it playing a role in rallying support against oppressive forces? Avenue Félix Éboué, previously known as Place Daumesnil, carries a rich history. This avenue, situated in the 12th arrondissement of Paris, intersects with several important roads, including Avenue Daumesnil and Boulevard de Reuilly. Originally marking the location of the Barrière de Reuilly on the Wall of the Farmers-General, it transitioned from “Place de la Barrière-de-Reuilly” to “Place Daumesnil” in 1864. Its current name honors Félix Éboué, a remarkable figure who bravely rallied to the Free French movement during World War II. Éboué, the first black French man appointed to a high post in the French colonies, served as governor of Guadeloupe and later Chad. His unwavering support for Charles de Gaulle’s Free French forces proved crucial in swaying French Equatorial Africa against the Vichy regime. His legacy extended beyond wartime contributions. He championed a new indigenous policy, advocating for the respect of African traditions and improved working conditions. His vision significantly influenced the Brazzaville Conference of 1944, aiming to better the lives of those in French colonies. Today, Avenue Félix Éboué stands not just as a Parisian thoroughfare. It represents Éboué’s courageous spirit, innovative thinking, and unwavering dedication to equality. A testament to his indelible mark on French and African history. At its center stands the Fontaine du Château d’eau, relocated from Place de la République in 1880. This fountain, with its intricate lion sculptures, serves as a beautiful centerpiece, inviting reflection on the complex and vibrant history of Avenue Félix Éboué.
