“Colourt” whispers the wind through the eucalyptus trees. This is Coolart Historic Homestead. A grand two-storey brick house it stands before you. A third-storey tower adds to its imposing presence.

Coolart isn’t just a homestead. It’s a living testament to the Mornington Peninsula’s rich history. Originally part of the Bunurong people’s land the name “Coolart” comes from their word for nearby Sandy Point. European settlers arrived. The Meyrick brothers took up a pastoral lease in 1839. Farming followed raising sheep and cattle.

Then came Frederick Sheppard Grimwade a Melbourne businessman and parliamentarian. In 1895 he bought Coolart. He built this very homestead as his family’s country retreat. Imagine the Grimwades enjoying this idyllic spot. Their photographs are on display inside a glimpse into their lives.

The 20th century saw changes. Tom Luxton acquired the property in 1937. He had a vision. He persuaded the state government to make it a wildlife sanctuary. He created an artificial lake and wetlands. A haven for birds was born.

Luxton’s legacy continues. The Victorian State Government bought Coolart in 1968 for conservation and education. Parks Victoria now manages this incredible place. A plaque honours Graham Pizzey the first warden from 1980 to 1984. A testament to his work protecting this special area.

Explore the formal gardens. Notice the exotic plants. A Gingko from China stands tall. The majestic Blue Atlas Cedar hails from Algeria and Morocco. These gardens designed in 1938 are a beautiful blend of nature and design.

Walk among the outbuildings. The Barracks dating back to the 1860s whispers stories of the past. The Buttery and Meat House built of handmade bricks add to the charm. They were part of Coolart’s working farm.

Look out over the wetlands. They support a breeding colony of over 1000 Australian white ibises. Koalas swamp wallabies and echidnas call the woodlands home. You might even spot a blue-tongue lizard or a long-necked tortoise basking in the sun.

Coolart is more than a homestead. It’s a journey through time. A celebration of nature. A place where history and wildlife intertwine. Enjoy your time at Coolart. Remember its history. And cherish its beauty.
